The Challenge

At a busy UK railway station, high water consumption prompted a targeted survey of the washroom facilities. Three urinals were found to be operating without effective flow controls, resulting in continuous filling and flushing and avoidable water loss.

The issue was largely hidden, as the cisterns are positioned above the urinals, making continuous water use difficult to identify during normal site operations.

The Solution

The survey identified three urinal installations where flow control was either removed or not functioning. Demeter recommended the installation of three new urinal sensor controls to regulate flushing and prevent continuous water use when the facilities were not in use.

• 3 urinals identified with continuous water use
• Approximately 6 litres/minute of avoidable water loss identified
• Over 3.1 million litres of potential annual water savings
• More than £15,000 annual cost saving
• Less than 1 month payback

From Hidden Loss to Action

The survey photographs show the type of installation identified on site. The elevated cisterns continuously refill when effective flow controls are absent, creating a source of water loss that can remain hidden from day-to-day view.

The survey gave the site team clear evidence of the issue and a straightforward corrective action, enabling them to act quickly.
